I’ve rounded up the top places to see light displays in Toronto.
Toronto Christmas Market
The most popular Christmas market in Ontario is the Toronto Christmas Market in the Distillery District. In 2020, they changed the name to The Distillery Winter Village, and it is just as fabulous as ever!
The historic district is completely decked out for the holidays with a towering Christmas tree, adorable European-like market huts, and lights everywhere you look! Along with a host of local artisans and food huts, there are photo-ops galore and tons of festive lights throughout the Christmas market.
One of the best light displays is their iconic countdown to Christmas display.

Snow Magic at Ontario Place
If you’re looking for fun holiday drive-thrus in Toronto then jump in the car and head down to Ontario Place! This iconic waterfront park is still entertaining visitors after 50 years! And throughout the holiday season, they are putting on Snow Magic!
This holiday lights drive-thru transforms Ontario Place into a wonderful fantasy land filled with lights, illuminated art projections, pyrotechnics, light tunnels, and plenty of holiday cheer! The nearly 2-kilometre trail takes 30 minutes to complete and is home to 18 installations created by Canadian artists.

Cavalcade of Lights Festival
Another one of the best places to take in holiday lights in Toronto is at Nathan Phillips Square. Not only is it home to the Holiday Fair in the Square but it is decked out with lights for the holidays.
Plus, it’s here that the city puts on the Cavalcade of Lights of Festival. Usually, they kick off the festival with an astounding fireworks display over City Hall.
The festival is home to light tunnels, glowing ice sculptures, and light displays inspired by cultural festivals around the world. Nathan Phillips Square is also home to one of the city’s free ice skating rinks.
The massive arches across the rink are decorated with strings of lights and huge twinkling ornaments. And of course, there’s the famous Toronto sign all lit up!

Holiday Lights Tour at Casa Loma
One of the best attractions in Toronto is Casa Loma! This enchanted castle in the middle of the city is filled with history, stories, and wonder.

There are two main events at Casa Loma during the holiday season, Christmas at the Castle and the Holiday Light Tour. The Holiday Lights Tour is bursting with phenomenal light displays throughout the gardens and tunnels.
There’s everything from massive light arches to sparkling animals! You can enjoy a self-guided walking tour around the grounds of Casa Loma, the tunnels, and even enjoy live performances too!

Bloor Yorkville Holiday Magic
Imagine a neighbourhood filled with white sparkling trees! Well, that is what you’ll find in Bloor Yorkville!
Every year from the end of November through December Bloor-Yorkville is transformed with a dazzling display of lights for their Holiday Magic event.

Polar Winter Festival
One of the largest walkthrough winter festivals in Toronto is the Polar Winter Festival. The festival takes place at Bandshell Park on the Exhibition Grounds.

De Sario Family Festival of Lights
Families across Ontario deck out their homes in true Griswold tradition! One of them is in Toronto!
For over 20 years, the De Sario family decorates their home in over 50,000 LED lights! At 165 Benjamin Boake Trail, near Downsview Park in Nork York, the De Sario Family Festival of Lights is a must addition to the long list of awesome free Christmas light displays in Toronto.
In honour of their daughter, who was treated at SickKids for juvenile diabetes, they raise funds for the hospital every year. You can see their bedazzled house in its true Christmas glory from the beginning of December to the beginning of January.

Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights
The award for the most popular Ontario light displays goes to the Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls! It’s the largest outdoor light festival in Canada and makes for the perfect excuse to plan a winter getaway to Niagara Falls!
How can you resist one of the best waterfalls in the world, a fun-filled downtown, and a wonderland of lights?
The wondrous OPG Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls takes place from the end of November through to February. And has been for over 40 years!
It’s spread out with light displays across Niagara Falls, including the Dufferin Islands and along the Niagara Parkway. There are over 75 displays and three million lights! And the best part is that it’s one of the best free displays of Christmas lights in Ontario!
You can wander along the streets and pathways to take it all in or opt for the warmth of your car, as many of the light displays can be seen from the road. The total distance of the OPG Winter Festival of Lights route is 8 kilometres. You can find downloadable maps for the route here.
There are two parts to the winter festival. The first is the Holiday part which runs from mid-November to the beginning of January. Throughout Niagara parks and the Dufferin Islands, you’ll see a host of holiday-themed displays and large 3D animals.
The second part is the Winter Wonderland which runs from mid-January through February. This part focuses on winter and love-themed displays and makes for the perfect date night! Displays will change and so will the route slightly.
There is so much going on throughout the festival including the free Niagara Falls Christmas Market, the Coca Cola Holiday Truck, a visit from Old Saint Nick himself, and so much more! Throughout the festival, there will also be plenty of live entertainment at the Hilton Fallsview Hotel & Suites.
And if you’re looking for parking there is the Falls parking lot across from the Table Rock Centre which is a paid lot.

Uxbridge Optimist Fantasy of Lights
Uxbridge is known as the ‘Trail Capital of Canada’ as well as the setting for the fictional town in the television show Schitt’s Creek. This small town is full of fabulous things to do, especially during the holidays!
During the festive season, there’s a Christmas Market, North Pole Light Up Express Train, and one of the best free drive-thru light displays in Ontario!
For over 10 years Elgin Park in Uxbridge gets reimagined into a festive holiday playland! In previous years the Uxbridge Optimist Fantasy of Lights was a walk-through event. But in 2020 they pivoted to a drive-through event with incredible success!
The Fantasy of Lights is home to over 75 light displays created and developed by local businesses, schools, churches, and community groups. The drive-thru takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
Light displays range from classic holiday characters like the Nutcracker and the Abominable Snow Monster to giant pieces like light-covered gingerbread homes. And the grand finale is a large light tunnel!

The Capital of Canada is home to a ton of fun things to do, one of the best winter festivals, and a bunch of great places to see Christmas lights in Ontario! Across Ottawa and in neighbouring towns you’ll find holiday drive-throughs and awesome light displays.
A few of the most popular places for light displays in Ottawa include Christmas Lights Across Canada, Magic of Lights, and Country Christmas Nighttime Drive-Through.
Christmas Lights Across Canada
One of the best light displays in Ontario is Christmas Lights Across Canada. Every year from December through the beginning of January, downtown Ottawa and Parliament Hill put on a light show like no other. Christmas Lights Across Canada began illuminating the dark winter nights of Ontario more than 30 years ago.
The main attraction of Christmas Lights Across Canada is the light and sound show that is displayed across Parliament Hill. The presentation colourfully lights up the buildings and is paired with an entrancing soundtrack.
The soundtrack and show are on a 15-minute loop every evening during the event. In celebration of the Winter Solstice, it will also be broadcast on television as IllumiNATION.
The other part of Christmas Lights Across Canada is Pathway of Lights. Along a selection of downtown streets and historic sites in Ottawa.
Pathway of Lights brings a wonderful glow to the Nation’s Capital with over 300,000 lights. Holiday lights are strung along Confederation Boulevard, Wellington Street, Elgin Street, and more. You’ll also find them along the Alexandra Bridge and Laurier Street in Gatineau.

Magic of Lights
For a truly magical experience in Ottawa this winter head to Wesley Clover Parks in Nepean. Here you’ll find the Magic of Lights drive-through lights experience. This 2 kilometre dazzling holiday drive-through will make you feel like you’re driving through an enchanted winter wonderland.
Along the winding path, you’ll be greeted by a variety of holiday scenes, Christmas characters, digital animations, and sparkling lights. Tickets for Magic of Lights can be found here and proceeds go to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
It’s one of the best places to enjoy Christmas lights in Ontario that gives back.

Holiday Light Festival
One of the best attractions near Ottawa is Saunders Farm! This 180-year-old family farm is a fabulous place to visit all year long but it becomes a magical spot for the Christmas season!
During December they run Country Christmas Days as well as a Holiday Light Festival. The Holiday Light Festival experience takes you through the family farm and surrounding forest.
Be sure to pop into their Town Square. Here you can warm up with their very own Saunders cider and refuel with Beavertails or one of their seasonal treats.
At the Farm Shop, you can browse their goodies for unique gifts, grab a homemade wreath to dress your front door, and also buy a precut Christmas tree!

Best Christmas Lights in the GTA
If you’re looking for fabulous lights displays in the GTA then you’ll find two of the best in Vaughan! Located just north of Toronto, Vaughan is filled with great places to go like Kleinburg, Richmond Hill, and Markham.
One of the biggest attractions is Canada’s Wonderland! During the holiday season, you’ll want to head to Vaughan for two great spots that are sure to dazzle! One is at Canada’s Wonderland and the other is in Assembly Park.
Nights of Lights
Just off Highway 400 and 7, you’ll find one of the best outdoor light displays near Toronto – Holiday Nights of Lights. Located in Assembly Park, this dazzling display of lights is in partnership with Holiday Fair in the Square in Toronto.
Part of the proceeds from Nights of Lights goes towards Epilepsy Toronto. It’s often noted that Nights of Lights is one of the best Ontario holiday light drive-thru experiences!
Now they’ve come back bigger and better as a walk-through experience with over a million lights that are synchronized to your favourite holiday music!
Nights of Lights is an almost 1 km trail. It features three fabulous glowing tunnels, a 44-foot geodesic dome, animated displays, and so much more to help bring some holiday cheer to the region!

WinterFest at Canada’s Wonderland
Canada’s Wonderland is Canada’s largest amusement park! For 40 years this top Ontario attraction has been drawing visitors and adventure seekers every summer.
Recently they began expanding their list of fun events deeper into the year like Halloween Haunt in the fall and now WinterFest for the holiday season. From the middle of November through to the end of December Wonderland is transformed into an enchanted winter dreamland.
WinterFest has so many fun and festive things to do and is a fabulous family-friendly event! The Elves have been busy at Canada’s Wonderland! The park is completely decked out in full holiday garb, from millions of holiday lights to hundreds of expertly decorated Christmas trees.
You’ll also find a bunch of fun festive photo-ops, themed rides, live shows, and ice skating on Snow Flake Lake. Canada Wonderland’s WinterFest is one of the best places to see Chrismtas lights in Ontario with the whole family.

Illumi
It started out in the fall of 2022, and now Illumi is the largest light, sound and multimedia show in the world! The display is set up just south of Highway 407 in Mississauga and is one of the top Ontario light displays!
The set up is massive and allows you to walk through 13 unique spaces that range from whimsical Christmas displays to inspiring world attractions! Plus, there’s a towering 47-metre-tall Tree of Lights at the end that can be seen from nearly everywhere you go!
Covering 600,000 square feet, Illumi is home to over 20 million LED lights as well as thousands of light displays, holograms, and more! The walk through takes between 1 to 1.5 hours. There’s also food trucks set up to fuel your adventure.
I’ve been to Illumi multiple times and love that it runs all year long !

Rusty Griswold’s Christmas Light Display
Inspired by the movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, this Burlington family started their now epic home light display in 2015.
Now, this Christmas light show is even marked on Google! Head to 2176 Devlin Drive in Burlington to check out their free holiday light show! The home is decked out in over 14,000 lights! Plus, there’s even speakers or you can tune into an FM station to listen to music while you take in the lights!
While it’s a free show, they do accept donations to SickKids Foundation via their website here. Be sure to add this to your list of awesome Christmas light displays in the GTA!

Owen Sound Festival of Northern Lights
On a charming inlet of Georgian Bay, at the base of the Bruce Peninsula, sits the unassuming town of Owen Sound. There are plenty of reasons to visit and things to do in Owen Sound, like chasing the many waterfalls in the area!
Plus, there’s a special annual festival that will have you adding it you’re your holiday to do list – the Owen Sound Festival of Northern Lights! It is considered one of the best holiday light displays in Ontario!
The Festival of Northern Lights in Owen Sound is one of the top events in the area and has been going strong for over 30 years.
The festival takes place in downtown Owen Sound, along the Sydenham River, and in Harrison Park. You’ll find over 300 light displays, many of which have been locally made, fireworks, craft shows, horse-drawn carriage rides, and more!

Lights On Stratford Winter Festival of Lights
New in 2020, the Lights On Stratford Winter Festival of Lights brought light and hope during a trying time. Now it’s touted as one of the best Ontario winter light festivals!
While there’s a wealth of incredible things to do in Stratford throughout the year, don’t forget to visit this fabulous city during the winter!
With Christmas markets, a fun Christmas Trail, and so much more, you’ll find Christmas in Stratford a must addition to your list of winter getaways!

The Winter Festival of Lights brings a host of amazing art installations and light displays throughout Stratford. Every year the theme of the light displays change. All the more reason to travel to Stratford this winter!
There are a bunch of different light displays in Stratford for the Lights On Stratford Winter Festival of Lights. In the Shakespearean Gardens, you’ll find a thousand lights. On Tom Patterson Island you’ll find more dazzling lights, as well as on many of the businesses and other buildings throughout town.

Holiday Magic at Blue Mountain
One of the most popular winter getaways in Ontario is Blue Mountain! And for good reason!
This charming village is like a Swiss Chalet village in the Alps! Located just outside Collingwood, at the bottom of the snow covered ski slopes, Blue Mountain Village is a winter wonderland.
They run a Christmas market every year and their shops and businesses are wrapped in big red bows and garland, with speakers broadcasting Christmas music for the holiday season.
Blue Mountain Village hosts a variety of incredible light displays throughout the year. But during the holidays you can enjoy one of Ontario’s best free light displays, Holiday Magic!
Every evening as darkness descends on the village it’s all aglow with twinkling lights. And there’s a 1 km path called the Holiday Light Trail that winds its way through the village and around Mill Pond.
Along with brilliant lights, this free light trail is home to interactive light displays like at the Dream Tree and Singing Forest. On weekends you can also enjoy live holiday music, fireworks, and so much more!

First Light at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons
One of the most magical light displays in Ontario is First Light. Every year Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Midland brings the grounds of this National historic site to life at night with their First Light event.
Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is the location of Ontario’s first European community. It was a settlement of the French Jesuit on the land of the Huron Wendat people, back in the mid-17th century. The old mission has been recreated and now operates as a living museum.
For over 20 years, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons comes to life by candlelight during its First Light event. The site’s pathways, buildings, and more are lit by over 5000 candles.
Families, couples, and more descend on these historic grounds to celebrate, learn, craft, shop, and sing and dance.
First Light is one of Ontario’s “Top 100” Events! Along with the over 5000 candles, there are fireworks on select nights, and even Martyrs’ Shrine is brilliantly lit. Plus, there’s a holiday market in the museum with many local vendors selling a ton of great items.

Eclipse – Walk with Light
Many head north to cottage country in the summer but winter in Muskoka is just as magical!
Along with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, museums, and more, Muskoka is now home to one of the coolest places to see light displays in Ontario!
At one of the top Huntsville attractions, Muskoka Heritage Place, is where you’ll find Eclipse – Walk with Light. This incredible light and sound experience is a must winter experience!
Visitors walk around the “path of light” where there’s everything from ice sculptures to shimmering lights twinkling in the trees. Plus, there’s plenty of fun interactive light displays too!
In addition to the stunning light displays and other fun effects, Eclipse hosts a variety of other experiences to add to the walk. One of my favourite is the goat walk, where you’ll walk with pygmy goats along the light trail.
Remember to dress warmly as the experience is completely outdoors and at night when temperatures drop. Tickets are very budget-friendly and can be purchased here.

Festival of Trees
Set along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, just an hour north of Toronto is Barrie. Many people visit the city in the summer for its incredible beaches and festivals. But it’s also a great spot in the winter! I may be biased because I live here.
With a long list of fun things to do in Barrie, visiting in December is magical! Throughout downtown you’ll find a variety of Christmas lights and decorations. Plus, there’s a towering Christmas tree in Meridan Square.
In addition, every winter Barrie hosts its annual Noella Festival along with Festival of Trees. Locals and visitors can purchase Christmas trees downtown. And as night falls, you can stroll the waterfront trail in Heritage Park.
The park is filled with fun and festive light displays. I love how many of them move as if their dancing.

Did you know you don’t have to go far if you’re looking for Christmas lights in Ontario? Most small towns, cities, and municipalities put out holiday lights.
For instance, the town I live in is full of Christmas light displays. One of my family traditions is taking a drive on Christmas Eve throughout the neighbourhood. We drive around to see all the homes and businesses decorated with blow-ups, Christmas lights, and other holiday decorations.
And this has now become a fabulous trend! Many counties and municipalities are creating Google maps of all the places to go near you to see Christmas Lights.
I do many every year including the one in Barrie, Orillia, and Simcoe County. Some of these homes are like seeing the Griswold’s Christmas movie come to life! With outstanding lights that cover the house, garage, and exterior, many are also synchronize the lights to music.

Alight at Night Festival
If you’re looking for awesome places to see Christmas lights in Eastern Ontario then head to Morrisburg. Located just an hour south of the of the nation’s capital, it’s one of the best day trips from Ottawa.
At Upper Canada Village you’ll find one of the biggest outdoor light festivals in Eastern Ontario. Upper Canada Village is one of the largest living history sites in Canada and depicts life in rural Upper Canada during the 1860s.
Upper Canada Village’s Alight at Night Festival puts on one of the best holiday light displays in Ontario! With over a million lights covering trees, heritage buildings, strung along fences, and more, Upper Canada Village transforms into a winter wonderland of light!

Simcoe Christmas Panorama
If you’re looking for a dreamy small town light display then head to Simcoe. Located in Southwestern Ontario’s Norfolk County, Simcoe is an idyllic small town rich with history!
But it’s also a great place to go if you’re looking for a taste of Christmas in Ontario! Starting back in 1958 with a bright idea, Simcoe Christmas Panorama was born the year after and is still going strong.
Simcoe Christmas Panorama transforms Simcoe’s Wellington Park into a fun and fanciful Christmas utopia. Here you’ll be swept away by an endless string of lights covering trees, the lighthouse, and everything in the park. There are also family-friendly activities, hot apple cider, cookies, and more. This free event runs from the beginning of December to the start of January.
Burlington Lakeside Festival of Lights
Another fabulous free light display in Ontario can be found along the lakeshore in Burlington. This is a perfect place to go if you’re looking for Christmas light displays near Toronto!
For over 25 years the Burlington Festival of Lights has been shining a little light of whimsy into the hearts of locals and visitors alike and is an outdoor light festival not to be missed.
Set along Lake Ontario in Spencer Smith Park, the Burlington Festival of Lights is the perfect event to add to your holiday traditions. Throughout the park, you’ll wander past tens of thousands of themed light displays. You can even see many of the lights from this lakeside festival by driving along Lakeshore Road.

Fantasy of Lights Festival
If you’re looking for things to do in Kingsville in winter then book your visit around Fantasy of Lights Festival! This nearly 30-year annual festival takes place across town. The festivities start with a Santa Claus parade downtown.
The Fantasy of Lights Festival in Kingsville is home to one of the many Christmas light displays in Ontario! Santa kicks it off by flipping the switch to turn on the lights in Lakeside Park.
Visitors will find a variety of light displays across the park. Fantasy of Lights runs from the end of November through the beginning of January.
Winterlit at Mountsberg
How about a little outdoor stroll in an incredible conservation area that’s lit? You can enjoy Mountsberg Conservation Area at night thanks to their Winterlit at Mountsberg event.
Mountsberg Conservation Area is located in Campbellville and is a great park to visit in the Halton region any time of year. There’s a range of trails, a Raptor Centre, and is wrapped around the Mountsberg Reservoir.
Consider visiting in the winter to see it in a whole new light! By day you can cross country ski or snowshoe the trails but on weekends at night they take on a glow.
During Winterlit you can stroll the Winterlit Trail that’s illuminated with lights and art installations. There’s also the Sugar Bush Trail that’s lit for an enchanted evening amble.
Winterlit is on from the end of December to late February, on weekends and holidays only. Reservations are required.
