Tips for Planning Ontario Winter Getaways
Winter Getaways takes a fair bit more planning than those in the summer. You’ll want to ensure you are packing your patience and warm clothes along with making sure your vehicle is prepared for the road. Below you’ll find a few key tips for making sure your Ontario winter getaway is a success!
When is winter in Ontario?
Technically winter in Ontario is from December 21 to March 19. But winter weather can begin much sooner and last longer depending on where in Ontario you’re planning to visit. For those looking for getaways in the winter that are milder then try sticking to places in southern Ontario. But if you’re looking for full winter wonderland adventures then head to Northern Ontario.
When does it snow in Canada?
The majority of snow in Canada comes from January through February. But here in Ontario, it can snow as early as late September or October and right through until April. But generally, there is snow in Ontario from late December through early March.
How cold is it in Ontario in winter?
Temperatures in Ontario range widely depending on where you are. Winter in Northern Ontario can see temperatures as cold as -50˚C, while places like Toronto are much milder. Average winter temperatures in Southern Ontario are around the 5˚C mark but can dip to -20˚C.
Winter Packing Essentials
To keep you warm and comfortable during your Ontario winter getaways be sure to pack layers. Some essential gear to pack for Canadian winters includes a warm coat, mitts, and a comfortable yet hardy pair of winter boots (like Merrel boots which I love!). Pack those cozy sweaters and scarves and fleece-lined tights (like these ones which I can’t live without).
On top of all the winter packing essentials for yourself, it’s also imperative that your car has all the gear it needs for winter too! If you’re planning an Ontario road trip in the winter don’t leave home without a proper snow brush, wiper fluid, a blanket, and of course snow tires.
If you don’t already, also consider purchasing roadside assistance. This can come in handy if you’re travelling during the winter and get stuck in the snow, among other obvious reasons.
