Tips for a Real Christmas Tree

Unlike fake trees, there’s a lot of work that goes into real Christmas tree. So, if you’re planning to buy a real tree this Christmas, I have a few tips for you. These tips include how to choose your tree and how to care for it!

Christmas tree

Christmas tree varieties – The only Christmas tree native to Ontario is the white spruce. However, most Ontario tree farms sell a variety, including: Balsam fir, blue spruce, Douglas fir, and Scots pine.

Things to consider when buying a tree – If you want a tree with a strong scent then choose a fir tree. They have sturdy branches for ornaments and are long-lasting. For those not keen on the smell, try a pine tree. They are less fragrant and appear full with their feathery needles.

Cost of Christmas tress – Trees generally start around $75 and go up. However, some farms are selling them in the $50 to $60 range. A few reasons for rising prices are climate change, labour shortages, and the time it takes to grow trees. In addition, sadly fewer people are choosing to be farmers.

How to care for your Christmas tree – Keep it in a cool spot, like your garage, if you aren’t putting it up right away. The tree needs water, so be sure to place it with at least 1 inch of water. Keep it away from heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves. It will last longer the cooler it is. Depending on heat and the moisture the tree gets, a Christmas tree can last for approximately 4 weeks indoors.
