Falmouth is a coastal town in Cornwall, England located on the River Fal. It has a population of around 25,000 people and is considered to be the gateway to Cornwall’s western side.
The town is known for its maritime history, as well as its beautiful beaches and incredible views of the sea. With its picturesque harbours and long stretches of sand, Falmouth is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
Where is Falmouth in Cornwall?
Falmouth is located in the southwest of Cornwall, near the border with Devon. It is easily accessible from London by train or car, and there are direct flights to Newquay Airport from many UK cities.

Yes, Falmouth is a great place to visit! It is full of things to see and do. From beautiful beaches and water sport activities to fascinating museums and breathtaking views of the sea, there’s something for everyone in this seaside town in Cornwall.
I think that Falmouth can get overlooked as visitors to Cornwall tend to gravitate towards the more popular towns of Newquay and St Ives. But I think that Falmouth is one of the best places to visit in Cornwall and should definitely be on your radar and is worth a visit as it has a lot to offer.

1. Visit Pendennis Castle
Pendennis Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks in Cornwall and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The castle was first built in 1539 by Henry VIII to defend the Fal Estuary from the French invaders.
This impressive castle is located at the mouth of the River Fal and offers stunning views out to sea.
2. Visit The National Maritime Museum
The National Maritime Museum Cornwall is a great place to learn about Falmouth’s maritime history and its importance to Britain during times of war. With interactive displays, galleries and an impressive collection of boats, this museum is ideal for all ages.
3. Soak Up The Sun At Falmouth’s Beaches
Falmouth is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall.
Castle Beach, Gyllyngvase Beach, Swanpool and Maenporth are all gorgeous stretches of sandy beach.
Castle Beach is conveniently located close to Pendennis Castle and has spectacular views over the harbour. It’s the perfect spot for sunbathing, swimming and beach games.

Trebah Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in Cornwall with wild orchids, giant redwoods and a fern-fringed stream.. Visitors can explore the garden’s large network of pathways that wind through this magical landscape. I love spending the afternoon relaxing her in nature.

The Falmouth Art Gallery is a great place to explore the works of local and international artists. The gallery has a permanent collection of art, as well as a rotating selection of interesting temporary exhibitions. There are also regular events and workshops held at the gallery.
7. Relax In Queen Mary Gardens
Queen Mary Gardens is a beautiful park in Falmouth which was originally opened in 1936 to commemorate the coronation of King George V. This stunning garden features a lake, ornamental flower beds and an impressive collection of trees. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or some relaxation.

There are lots of great ways to get active out on the waves in Falmouth.
Paddleboarding is my favourite way to enjoy Falmouth’s stunning coastline and I think that it is one of the most fun things to do in Falmouth. With its calm waters and beautiful views, it’s the perfect activity for those looking for a relaxing day out. Mylor Sailing School offers lessons and courses in sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding, while Falmouth Surf School offers lessons in surfing.
9. Visit St Mawes Castle
For a fun day out, you can take a boat taxi over to St Mawes Castle. The castle is a 16th-century fort which was built to protect Falmouth from attack. This impressive castle is now home to a museum and offers stunning views of the Carrick Roads and Fal Estuary.

St Anthony Head is located on the eastern side of Falmouth and offers stunning views across the Fal Estuary. This is a great spot for a peaceful walk or to spot some wildlife. I have spotted lots of birds, seals and dolphins in this area.

This stunning stretch of coastline is a must-see for all visitors to Falmouth. It is one of my favourite places in all of Cornwall. It has breathtaking views and winding paths, so it’s the perfect way to explore Cornwall’s beautiful landscape. There are plenty of trails to choose from, so you can pick a route that suits your fitness level.
12. Explore Glendurgan Garden
Glendurgan Garden is a stunning garden which was created in the 19th century by the Fox family. With its lush green valleys and spectacular waterfalls, this is a great place to explore and take some lovely photos. There’s also an adventure playground for the kids.

Falmouth High Street is home to lots of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. If you’re looking for some souvenirs or a special gift, then this is the perfect place to find something unique. When it comes to the best Falmouth shops I really love The Grey Lurcher. It’s one of my favourite shops and I love its selection of cute gifts, cards, kitchenware and homeware.
14. Spot seals & dolphins in Falmouth Bay

Here’s a fun fact about Falmouth… Falmouth Harbour is the world’s third largest deep-water harbour!
The harbour is a hive of activity, with many sailboats, yachts, fishing boats and other vessels moored here. It has a long history and is home to the National Maritime Museum. It’s a great spot to take a relaxing stroll and take in the views or just sit and watch the boats come in.

The Fal River Festival is so much fun! It’s an annual event in Falmouth and is very popular with locals. The festival takes place every year over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

20. Find The Killigrew Monument
This is one of the more unusual things to do in Falmouth. You can find the Killigrew Monument opposite Arwenack House on Falmouth’s harbourfront. It is named after Falmouth’s founding family. However, there is no inscription anywhere on the pyramid to confirm this so it’s a bit of a mystery.
The strange monument is kind of ugly but it’s interesting enough that It’s still worth a visit!

Even though there are plenty of things to do in Falmouth to keep you busy, Falmouth is also a great base for some nearby day trips. Here are a few of my favourite days out near Falmouth that are all within easy reach.
Gweek Seal Sanctuary
Just a short drive from Falmouth, Gweek Seal Sanctuary is home to rescued seals that are rehabilitated before being returned to the wild.
You can learn all about the incredible work that they do at the seal rescue centre and meet the resident seals and sea lions. There are also several underwater viewing areas where you can watch these amazing animals in action.
Flambards Theme Park
Flambards Theme Park offers all kinds of fun for the whole family. The park features roller coasters, a Victorian village and an indoor soft play area. Plus, there’s also a wildlife centre which is great for learning about animals from around the world.
As a kid, I would beg my parents to take me here every weekend.
Truro
Truro is Cornwall’s only city and is well worth a visit.
You can spend the day exploring the city’s cobbled streets and beautiful Georgian architecture or take a wander around the shops and markets.
Truro Cathedral is also an amazing building with an interesting history.
Museum of Cornish Life in Helston
The Museum of Cornish Life in Helston is a great day out for anyone interested in learning about the history and culture of Cornwall.
You can explore the museum’s interactive galleries, or take part in an educational activity session to learn more about life in ancient times.
Stithians Lake
Stithians Lake is an artificial lake located just outside of Falmouth. It’s a great spot for some outdoor activities such as cycling, walking and fishing. You can also take a relaxing boat ride across the lake or enjoy a spot of birdwatching.
No matter what you do here, it’s sure to be a peaceful and enjoyable time.
Lizard Peninsula
The Lizard Peninsula is a stunning area of Cornwall and home to several quaint villages, beautiful beaches and spectacular views.
There are lots of things you can do here such as exploring the many coves, trying some local seafood or simply taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Portreath
One of my favourite beaches in Cornwall!
Portreath beach has a stunning white sandy beach, turquoise waters and plenty of activities for all ages. You can enjoy some beach activities like kayaking or surfing.
You can also search for Lady Bassett’s baths, a series of 9 tidal pools carved into the rocks.
Take a boat to Flushing
Flushing is a pretty harbour village just across the bay from Falmouth.
To get there you can take the Flushing Ferry which is only £4 and will take you on a short 10-minute scenic cruise to Flushing.
In Flushing, there are some nice walks you can take and some good pubs too.

Airports near Falmouth, UK
The closest airport to Falmouth is Newquay Cornwall Airport, which is approximately a 30-minute drive away.
Newquay airport receives flights from around the UK as well as some from the USA, the Middle East and Europe.
How to get to Falmouth by train
The closest major train station to Falmouth is Truro, from here you can get a connecting train to Falmouth Town Railway Station.
Trains from London Paddington arrive at Truro every two hours and take around 5 hours.
How to get to Falmouth by bus
National Express run buses to Falmouth from London Victoria Station or Bristol Bus Station. The journey takes around 8 hours and there are several stops along the way.

The Falmouth Hotel is a great option if you’re looking for a luxurious stay. It’s located close to the waterfront and is just a short stroll from all the best attractions in town.

Harbour Lights
Harbour Lights is a lovely authentic fish and chip shop and restaurant. It’s my favourite place to get lunch in Falmouth.
Dolly’s Tea Room
A cute traditional tea room. This is the best place for afternoon tea. You must try the delicious homemade scones.
Swanpool Beach Café
This cute beach cafe has a really nice terrace with great views. They have glass panels on the terrace which protect you from the wind so it becomes a bit of a sun trap in the summer. The coffee here is really good and the staff are super friendly.
The Cove
This Michelin-star bar and restaurant is so nice and is definitely my favourite place for a fancy dinner in Falmouth. The vegan options here are really yummy.
Best Places to Drink in Falmouth
Beerwolf Books
Beerwolf is a hidden gem and is one of my favourite pubs to spend a rainy afternoon in. Beerwolf is a unique combination of bar, cafe, bookstore and arcade. It has tons of books that you can borrow to read whilst you are having a pint. You won’t get bored here, there are 3 pinball machines! This one-stop destination offers all you need to create the perfect night or afternoon out.
The Working Boat
This bar and restaurant is beautifully decorated and has fantastic views. I recommend that you come here for a pint at sunset. The food is also really good too.
